Tourism businesses still suffering from the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Narelle can apply for payments of up to $20,000, the WA Government has announced.
Tourism Minister Reece Whitby is expected to travel to Exmouth on Sunday, where he will officially announce the $1.45 million tourism support package which will see one-off payments of up to $10,000 made to eligible businesses employing under four workers and up to $20,000 for businesses employing four or more staff.
The government will also release details of a scheme whereby vouchers offering 50 per cent off selected tours and experiences will be made available.
The vouchers will be supported by marketing campaigns encouraging visitors to explore and support the Coral Coast region.
“We know tourism businesses relying on the busy Easter period have been hit particularly hard, and these payments will help keep them afloat,” Premier Roger Cook said on Saturday.
“The message to tourists is clear: many businesses in the region remain open and are ready for business.
“I urge Western Australians to visit, support those businesses, and take advantage of the great offers available.”
Exmouth was virtually cut off from the rest of WA after Cyclone Narelle tore through the north of the State last month.
Just this week, Main Roads announced parts of Minilya-Exmouth Road were now open, allowing road trips from Perth to Exmouth via North West Coastal Highway and Burkett Road.
Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said Exmouth, Shark Bay, Kalbarri, Geraldton, Carnarvon, Coral Bay, Onslow and towns further in the Kimberley were open for business and ready to welcome visitors during the school holidays and the ANZAC Day long weekend.
In addition to the Premier’s Relief Payment, payments of up to $20,000 for residents whose home has been severely damaged or destroyed are also being provided under the Premier’s Natural Disaster Recovery Fund — and $10,000 for those who have suffered major damage.
Funded by Lotterywest, applications for payments open today (Sunday).
“Travellers are encouraged to keep or reschedule their bookings – rather than cancel – to support local businesses.” Tourism Minister Reece Whitby said.
“While it’s encouraging to see towns reopening across the region, its essential we continue doing everything we can as a Government to help impacted businesses get back on their feet.
“This $1.45 million support package is about ensuring the businesses recover and have the support and confidence they need to move forward and thrive again.
“The Coral Coast is a world-class tourism destination, and these measures will help businesses recover faster while giving visitors even more reason to return and experience everything the region has to offer.
“Exmouth, Coral Bay, Carnarvon, Ashburton and the Upper Gascoyne regions are open for business so please support these operators by booking a holiday or visit these towns – because they want to see you.”
