Hunter Mahan walked away from the PGA Tour in 2021 and has been open about being completely burnt out on all things involved with the non-stop grind of professional golf. Over the last five years, he’s enjoyed the dad life at home, started to coach high school golf, and recently got the itch to pick up the clubs again, albeit in a different capacity.
Mahan, a six-time winner on the PGA Tour, jumped into the golf content space in June and has been posting videos of his own journey back into the game, instructional videos, and anything in between while growing his Instagram following to over 55,000.
“My wife just took some videos, and she said, ‘You should start playing a little bit more, I can tell you’re interested,'” Mahan recalled in an interview with OutKick. “So, I went out to the course the next day and hit record on that first video, and just sort of talked about it, and I wasn’t sure how it looks or how it feels, but this is kind of what I’m thinking about doing. The response from all the people, my fans I guess, if you want to call them that, was so positive. It was sort of overwhelming, and we were sort of surprised by it.”

While Mahan is enjoying the new endeavor in the golf content space, he also shared that potentially competing on the PGA Tour Champions is on the table as well. He has a little over five years until he turns 50 and becomes eligible to compete on the senior circuit, but the competitive juices appear to be returning as he’s already eyeing a potential return to professional competition.
“I am exploring all things right now, and trying to figure all that out, and trying to figure out what can my place be in golf today,” Mahan continued. “I’ve got over five years until the senior tour and see if I want to do that, the Champions Tour, and that could be a lot of fun because I’ve got so many friends that I played golf with that we’re all going to turn 50 around the same time, so that could be a lot lof of fun.

“But, I’ve got some time, I’ve got some interests to try and figure everything out as best I can, and figure out what’s a great medium for me to get out more golf content. I’ve had a lot of great conversations with all kinds of people about all this stuff. It is cool to see the golf community from a non-professional and professional way to react to this stuff and learn more about it. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Mahan, who was ranked in the Top Five of the Official World Golf Ranking in 2012, would have immediate status to compete on the PGA Tour Champions under current guidelines upon turning 50, given his six PGA Tour wins.
The former Oklahoma State standout earned his first win on Tour at the 2007 Travelers Championship, with his last victory coming seven years later at The Barclays.
