British prosecutors have charged the glam rock singer Gary Glitter with three counts of indecent assault of a girl younger than 14, and another count of unlawful sex with a girl younger than 13.
The country’s Crown Prosecution Service announced the charges against Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, in a news release on Thursday. It listed his address as a prison in Devon, England.
Bethan David, a British prosecutor, said in the release that the charges follow “allegations made by a woman relating to a period of alleged abuse that took place between 1978 and 1981.”
The Metropolitan Police, London’s police force, revealed further details of the case in its own news release. The police said that the offenses occurred at a residential address in Kensington, London, and that the woman reported them on Jan. 9, 2025.
Mr. Gadd will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Aug. 5 for a first hearing in relation to the case, the Crown Prosecution Service said.
As Gary Glitter, Mr. Gadd was one of the biggest stars of the glam rock boom of the 1970s, especially thanks to “Rock and Roll (Part 2),” a raucous single that reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is still regularly played at sports events and used in movies.
Under British law, it is an offense for the news media to report any information that could prejudice a trial once a person is charged. It is also an offense for outlets to report information that could identify someone who has made sexual assault allegations.
