Starmer Says He Will Run if There Is a Leadership Contest
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he would run if there were a contest for the Labour Party leadership. A top rival in the party, Andy Burnham, won a special parliamentary election, making him eligible to challenge the prime minister.

“There isn’t a leadership contest —” “But when there is, it’s imminent, prime minister, isn’t it?” “There isn’t one at the moment. But as I’ve said on many, many occasions, I don’t think that’s a good thing for the country, to plunge us into chaos. But if there is a contest, just to be clear with you, then yes, I will run, I will stand. And I’ve said repeatedly, I’m not going to walk away from that.” “This now is the change moment. We have an opportunity to turn the tide, to make the country feel like it’s working again. I will work relentlessly to make what the people have voted for here happen. And we will do that together, won’t we? We will take the energy of this campaign and we will bring it forward into changing British politics for the better.”
